The Library Guide
Books in the library are organized in shelves by the Library of Congress (LC) number. LC classification is a system that categorizes books by their topics. An LC number can be like the format below :
BF723 T53 R68 2011
The first part of the LC number "BF723" represents the category of the book by its topic. In the LC system, the first letter of this part is the main area of topic. Each subsequent letter indicates next level of sub categories of the main topic. Numbers that are written at the end of this part represents the last level of sub-categories. For example, BF723 represents :
B - Philosophy, Psychology, Religion
BF - Psychology
BF723 - Developmental psychology (including infant psychology, child psychology, adolescence, adulthood)
